About Fraktur Fire and Elemental Inventories
“When artists set out to create magical objects and incantations, the result is magic multiplied. It’s louder, and brighter. Jason Urban and Leslie Mutchler offer us this by drawing on the visual language of the Natural History Museum: an archive. Through their work, they reveal a shifting inventory of talismanic objects and spells, designed for our times. This kind of magic is essential.”

JASON URBAN and LESLIE MUTCHLER (JULMstudios) have been collaborating since 2012. They live and work in Brooklyn, New York. As a duo, they exercise an egalitarian approach to art and life that focuses on research and problem-solving. Their practice, which joins the physical to the metaphysical, focuses more and more on the natural world and how digital technologies influence and distort our relationship to nature.
Urban and Mutchler have had solo exhibitions at Eastern Edge (St. Johns, Canada), the Center for Book Arts (New York, NY), Monaco (St. Louis, MO), the Delaware Contemporary (Wilmington, DE), the NARS Foundation (Brooklyn, NY), Grizzly Grizzly (Philadelphia, PA), The Print Center (Philadelphia, PA), Centre for Fine Print Research (Bristol, UK), Space Gallery (Portland, ME), Atelier Circulaire (Montreal, Canada), among others. They have been granted numerous residencies, notably at Edition/Basel in Basel, Switzerland, the Cork Printmakers International Visiting Artist Residency in Cork, Ireland, and the Dieu Donne Workspace Residency in Brooklyn. Both are affiliated with the Pratt Institute, where Mutchler runs the Foundation Program and Urban teaches publishing courses in the Communication Design program.
