For this workshop, Atelier Circulaire invited participants to try out “Kitchen lithography”… using barbecue sauce! The aim of the workshop was to show that lithography is not an art form confined to professional workshops. Atelier Circulaire offered a chance to learn how to create lithographs using materials that anyone can find in their own kitchen.

2019 — The Other
In 2019, the FAIMTL’s theme aimed to explore the “other” spaces occupied by the printed arts, i.e. public and virtual spaces. In their relationship to the public space, the printed arts see the boundaries of the medium and the constraints of technology dissolving and opening up to new possibilities. By occupying the public space, printed art occupies the social space. The virtual space makes it possible to use the languages and aesthetics of the printed arts while redefining them and proposing new codes and new readings. The digital technologies that have, in recent years, shaken up traditional practices offer a whole new space for experimentation and dissemination.

GRANDE Printed Art Fair 2019 – April 13-14
La 3e édition de la GRANDE Foire d’art imprimé du Festival des Arts Imprimés de Montréal, FAIMTL a été un véritable succès! L’intérêt des visiteurs s’était déjà fait sentir en amont sur les réseaux sociaux.
Pour la première fois depuis sa création, la GRANDE Foire a été ouverte deux jours.
Samedi 13 avril, première belle et douce journée de printemps, on observait les visiteurs qui, arrivés avant l’ouverture, attendaient devant les portes de la Foire.
Cette année, la GRANDE Foire s’est tenue en plein cœur du boulevard St-Laurent au WIP (Work In Progress), qui est également le quartier général du Festival des arts imprimés de Montréal. De nombreux curieux sont entrés au WIP à l’occasion d’une balade sur le boulevard Saint-Laurent.
Le succès de la GRANDE Foire a été partagé avec les gérants de ce bel espace de diffusion culturelle qui accueillait son premier événement. Les visiteurs, curieux et/ou amateurs d’art imprimé ont circulé en continu et beaucoup sont repartis avec des œuvres.
À l’accueil, ARCMTL a vendu de belles affiches et des petites œuvres imprimées issues de divers projets, tels que Distroboto (machine distributrice de petites œuvres d’art) et des guides L’Imprimé Augmenté (une création originale ARCMTL). Nous avons fait des démonstrations d’imprimé augmenté qui ont beaucoup plus aux petits et grands.

Collectif Blanc — April 4-14
Throughout the FAIMTL festival, Montreal-based curatorial platform Collectif Blanc presented a selection of print projects on its Facebook and Instagram pages that dealt with public spaces or which were meant to be displayed in such spaces. By showcasing these projects on social media, Collectif Blanc engages in an examination of print as social vehicle, in both the virtual and physical worlds.
Zocalo / Myriam Tousignant — April 4-14
In March, the multidisciplinary artist, Myriam Tousignant, created a fanzine workshop at the Zocalo Printed Art Artists’ Centre. Inspired by the form of expression of Blackout poetry or poetry by subtraction, the participants reused the journal as a basic material for the creation of short, powerful sentences. These poems, thus created, were assembled to create an open and engaged narrative. The poems produced were used to create one or more accordion books printed in 250 copies. In addition, an original illustration related to the content of the poems was produced by artist Mélodie Vachon Boucher, comic book author and feminist illustrator.
Sequence of Events Exhibition by Emma-Kate Guimond at Arprim — April 6 – May 11
Emma-Kate Guimond’s practice unfolds in a fully self-aware fusion of performance art, video, drawing and writing. Appropriating the various codes of dance, theatre, filmmaking and design, she explores different performative modes, from the commonplace and dramatic to the spectacular. Starting from the idea that reality is inseparable from performed actions, the artist creates absurd situations that question the notions of physical and emotional labour within the context of art, politics and the economy. In sequence of events, Emma-Kate Guimond revisits the traces of possible performance (2015–2017), focusing on the tension between the direct experience of an event and a still image of it, as well as the notion of empathy and how it applies to scripted directions.
Elle rêve, elle cœur, elle crie, elle coup de poing Exhibition by Geneviève Cadieux-Langlois at Arprim — April 6 – May 11
Between making a good quiche and finding a beautiful branch, she makes a list of her dreams, her anxieties and the things that make her feel good. She walks her body and words from one side to the other to drap the witnesses to her journey. GENEVIÈVE CADIEUX-LANGLOIS presents a series of fabrics printed in shimmering colours. Some of them with abstract motifs bear quotations from the book _Territoires féminins_, a collection of literary essays edited by Sylvie Mongeon. These excerpts are accompanied by sentences from her inner speech, a poetry that is sometimes raw, sometimes tender or naive. When carborundum printing meets screen printing, the lines get dirty, adjust to life, a little tired of not having lived enough.
Around the Bottle Guided Tours of the BANQ — April 8 & 9
On Monday April 8, from 2 to 3:30pm and on Tuesday April 9, from 6 to 7:30pm, three specialized librarians of BAnQ Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie offered participants an unusual journey through their Heritage Collections around a common theme: the bottle. Bottle of beer, syrup, perfume or milk, this everyday object is everywhere around us, including in printed art. After a dive into old advertising and ephemeral prints, they embarked on an iconographic treasure hunt through fanzines and works of art, and then make a return to the public space amid beer posters and labels.
Artexte on Tap – special edition MPFA — April 10
Artexte on Tap is an ongoing bimonthly series takes place every two months, providing an occasion to engage in dialogue and share a drink in the library. Guided by specific themes and introduced by Artexte’s librarians and invited guests, a selection of documents were presented to allow opportunities for discovery and to generate informal conversations about contemporary art and documentation. For this edition, Catherine Barnabé, director of the Festival’s 2019 programming and independent curator, presented the result of her research following a micro-residency in the Artexte archives on the Festival’s theme. A post was then produced for the blog articles.
Launch of Les Ponts, an Upgradeable installation by Ileana Hernandez at L’ÉCRIN, showcase of L’imprimerie centre d’artistes — April 11
Inspired by the rotulos, a tradition of handmade posters in Mexico, Ileana Hernandez proposed to use L’Écrin from April 1st to June 30 as a bridge of communication between L’imprimerie centre d’artiste and the East of Ste-Catherine Street. The showcase of L’écrin became a giant screen where, through a play of reflections, shimmers and camouflage, opacity and transparency, appearance and disappearance, the private space became public. Visible day and night, some elements of the installation were revealed while others remained hidden depending on the time of day. The launch of this exhibit took place as part of the festival on April 11, from 5 to 7 p.m.
Launch of Once in a Lifetime an exhibition by Amery Sandford at Atelier Circulaire — April 11
For her exhibition at Atelier Circulaire, Amery Sandford presented an installation work titled Once in a Lifetime that enveloped the space of the gallery through the use of screen printing, sculpture, and installation.
Playing with the perspective of the viewer, the artist explored the fabrication and dismantling of a curious event. The scenes depicted in the prints could have taken place in an ambiguous public space that evoked the environment of a doomed festival trying hard to impress its attendees, a calamitous celebration of national identity, or a highly anticipated concert that ended in complete chaos.
Amery Sandford pulled the viewers into an absurd universe that contained a poetic reflection and critique on the vicissitudes of the event.
The launch of this exhibit took place as part of the festival on April 11, at 5:30 p.m.
Peaux Urbaines Exhibition by Marilou André at WIP — April 12-14
Through artistic interventions in the urban space, Marilou André created prints of sections of architecture and public infrastructure. The artist produced an art printed on skins made of moulded silicone, a material that is unconventional to graphic printing. Her hybrid technique, which is at once performative, sculptural and printed, allows her to extract the reliefs and organic elements from the urban landscape. Her performative gesture is also a pretext to interact with residents in their environment and to document their stories about issues related to the printed subject.
Marilou André exhibited the video documentation of an urban intervention created especially for the Festival and the resulting printed work. Her approach in contextual art aims to question the limits of artistic expression in the public space and the foundations of living together while discerning the poetic value of these social interactions and the traditional art object.
Marge normale I & II by GALERIE GALERIE at WIP – April 12-14
With Marge normale I & II, Galerie Galerie presented the work of Alexis Quesnel-Denette and Julie Tremble as a two-part web project. Evoking the idea of printing in the age of the Internet, copying and mass dissemination of files, the project takes root in the concept of reproduction by inviting free download and purchase of digital works in limited editions. The project was presented at WIP (3487 St Laurent Blvd, Montreal, QC H2Y 3T6) from April 12 to 14.
Print Augmented: an exploration of the possibilities of augmented reality for printed art — April 12
Augmented Reality (AR) is an exciting new technology that can mix the digital and physical together, providing all sorts of possibilities for printed artworks. This presentation features the artist James Kerr has been creating AR art prints and books since 2015 under the name Scorpion Dagger. Through the exhibition The Augmented Print, he presented examples of his creations and discussed the recent evolution of this technology.
Louis Rastelli, founder of the Distroboto art vending machine network, also presented the outcome of an AR printed art exploration project involving artists at the Engramme and Atelier Circulaire artist-run centres, where AR works were created using traditional printing techniques. Several artists will talk about their first AR experience in these workshops, and the audience will be invited to ask questions about this exciting new hybrid practice.
FAIMTL / Evening of Pecha Kucha Project Presentation at WIP — April 12
An evening of project presentation inspired by the Pecha Kucha formula facilitated by Jean-Philippe Luckhurst-Cartier at 8pm at WIP (3487 St Laurent Blvd, Montreal, QC H2Y 3T6). The concept: 20 images each scrolling for 20 seconds. The 6:40 minute presentations provided a concise portrait of a subject related to the Festival’s theme. About twelve speakers talked about various initiatives that push print art out of its scope.
FAIMTL / Possible éditions — La Fabrique d’affiches Workshop at WIP — April 13
In collaboration with Possibles éditions, FAIMTL offered a workshop of poster creation to be distributed in the public space. Participants were supervised by mediators who lead a reflection around the speech in the public space and guide them in the creation and the realization of the posters. Participants left with their poster that they could stick on the city walls.
Paper Tales workshop by Alexandre Quessy at WIP — April 4 & 14
Through this activity, participants had the opportunity to explore frame-by-frame (stop-motion) animation using Toonloop—an intuitive software that integrates the capture, editing, and viewing processes, allowing the creative act to unfold in real time.
In exclusivity for the Festival, children were invited to animate illustrations by Amery Sandford from Grilled-Cheese magazine, bringing to life their own unique Paper Tales. The workshop was offered twice during the Festival: once during the opening night at 5pm for adults, and again on Sunday, April 14 from 1 to 5pm, for kids and families.
BBQ sauce lithography Workshop by Atelier Circulaire at WIP – April 13 & 14
Lithography is a method of printing originally based on the immiscibility of oil and water and that requires a stone or metal plate with a smooth surface. It allows the reproducing in multiple copies of the same printing.
